May 2008....
Our West Texas Heritage and Education Days were a great success. Thanks to all members who donated their time, food items, and auction item donations. It was a lot of hard work but everyone came away from the meals full and satisfied. Between the BBQ lunch and the auction, the Friends Group raised over $2500.
The tribute to Colonel McTaggart was a heart warming experience. There aren't enough words in the dictionary to adequately describe how much the Colonel has contributed to this community and to Fort McKavett State Historic Site. The plaque dedicating the Research Library to the Colonel has been mounted. The next time you are at the Fort, please drop by to see it.
Now that we have transferred to the Texas Historical Commission, we have acquired four band new Chevrolet trucks, a new front end loader with backhoe and shredder, and an enclosed trailer for our Living History program. We are currently accepting applications for a Clerk II position which will bring our staff count to eight.
With the additional staff, we are better able to do educational outreach. In addition to our own living history event, this year we have sent representatives to Fort Chadbourne, Fort Richardson, Lake Brownwood State Park, Buffalo Gap for a 1800's baseball game, and Fort Clark. Upcoming events will see us at Fort Mason, the Fort's Muster at the Fort Worth Stock Yards and Fort Griffin later in the year.
In July the Fort will once again host the Old Stories, New Voices camp.
Our yearly meeting will be held in October in conjunction with the Fall Johnson Space Center Astronomical Society Star Party and the Fort McKavett Town Reunion.
