Living History Safety
New Manual for 2010

BACK

The Texas Historical Commission and the staff at Fort McKavett State Historic Site are grateful to all our volunteers and living historians who donate their time and energies toward making our West Texas Heritage Days a fun and exciting event for all.  We are proud of our safety record over the years and want to continue to work closely with our participants to keep the event safe and enjoyable.

The Texas Historical Commission has recently revised the safety manual for events.  This safety manual will be used to ensure our West Texas Heritage Day and our encampments are as safe as possible for participants and visitors alike.  The manual can be found on-line by clicking on the following hyperlink: "Safety Manual For Living History Exhibits, Demonstrations, and Reenactments, March 2010".  The most notable change has been to include a minimum age for handling or demonstrating any type of  firearm, ammunition of any kind, artillery piece, artillery charge or bladed weapon. While we are most grateful to our participants of all ages, and we realize that participating in living history events is often a family activity, we feel that we need to minimize the risks involved to our younger volunteers by limiting their participation in some of the higher risk demonstrations and activities. We truly apologize for any inconvenience this may impose.

We also request that each encampment/group appoint a safety officer for their group who will assist the site's safety officer with ensuring weapons get inspected and their camp has no safety concerns that will endanger fellow participants or the public.

Safety Manuals will be available during the event at the Big Tent (all hours), Fort McKavett's registration tent located on the west end of the parade ground (when manned), the Visitor's Center (8 to 5), and at the participant's entrance gate during check in (when manned).
