Education Day, Friday March 23
Teachers: Every year in March, Fort McKavett State Historic Site supported by the Friends of Fort McKavett and living historians from around the state hold their annual living history event. Friday March 23rd is Education Day where elementary, middle, and high school students are invited to the fort to enjoy an exciting day filled with demonstrations and explanations of military and civilian history of the 1800's. Students should bring a sack lunch as food will not be available to the public on Friday.
The event is free to all public, private, and home-school students in grades K-12 , their teachers and chaperones. Invitations to local area schools will be mailed in December. West Texas Heritage Day, Saturday March 24
Guests: Saturday, March 24th is West Texas Heritage Day. Regular admission fees to the site apply. Gates open at 8:00 am. Flag raising is at 0900. At Noon the Friends of Fort McKavett will be hosting a BBQ lunch for all participants and the general public. Donations to help defray the cost of the food are requested for the meal. A detailed schedule of activities will be available closer to the event after we have received all the volunteer historian's registrations. Some of the activities planned for the event are a performance by Uvalde's Sahawe Indian dancers, artillery, cavalry, and infantry demonstrations, Buffalo Soldiers, frontier women's life and school, the Texas Camel Corp, buffalo hunters, chuck wagons, Native American culture, a mountain man, Dutch Oven cooking, frontier wood working, and live music by the Ice House Brass Band during the BBQ.
